The Resolutions, OKAY?
My Very Good Year is all about improving and living more intentionally year after year. Our ability to change and upgrade all areas of life in 365 days. What it doesn’t represent is setting New Year’s resolutions that we never accomplish.
I‘ve always loved the energy behind setting resolutions, but there was always a lack of accountability that came with it. Old habits are often extremely hard to change even with all the knowledge and support we might have. The desire to do better is strictly contingent upon our ability to be discipline and resilient with our goals. All the planning in the world will lead to disappointment if we are not putting the true energy and work behind it.
I remember boldly declaring my goals and creating vision boards at the top of each year which ended up becoming a form of self-manipulation. At my core I would hype myself up to all the big things I wanted to accomplish, but intrinsically I lacked the necessary willpower to do so. Instead of doing the inner work I lived in denial about the real reasons why my goals never manifested. This is where self-reflection played a major role for me.
Taking the time to sit with yourself and have deep inner dialogue about your dreams and how you can bring them to fruition. Honestly we can start moving toward our goals at any time during the year, we do not have to wait for the New Year. So what’s really holding you back?
Here are a few self-reflective questions that have helped me push forward with my goals at anytime of the year:
What am I willing to sacrifice to meet my goal? (time, Money, Bad Habits, People)
What is the true motive behind my goal? (why do I want this?)
What challenges do I expect to face? (poor time management, resources, support)
What outside support will I need? (mentor, family, friends, community)
What do I wish to gain from achieving this goal? (purpose, fulfillment, stability)
