it’s your life: take control

Quite a bit has happened in the last week, and I felt compelled to share a few thoughts. Last week’s election made it clear what was most important to many people— self-sufficiency and self-efficacy. This outcome highlights how deeply people value stability and security, especially in uncertain times. But as we look at the year ahead, this moment can be an invitation for each of us to refocus, recalibrate, and take proactive steps in our own lives. That’s the heart of "My Very Good Year": embracing the potential for transformative change within a single year through thoughtful planning and purposeful actions.

As we move forward into a new year, let’s take this opportunity to create a fulfilling year for ourselves, regardless of the challenges we face. Today, let’s explore how focusing on key areas like career, money management, health, relationships, and self-development can help us build resilience, stay self-sufficient, and thrive.

1. Career and Business: Plan and Progress

Our work occupies a huge part of our lives, and making it fulfilling can elevate our overall well-being. Now is the time to ask yourself, “What skills can I refine? What steps can I take to reach my goals?” Set small, achievable targets that you can reach on a monthly or quarterly basis. Embracing new skills and professional development—whether that’s taking an online course, networking, or volunteering for a new project at work—keeps you feeling confident and progressing even as things shift around you.

2. Money Management: Build your Wealth

Financial health is about more than just money—it’s about freedom, security, and peace of mind. Take time to understand your finances, eliminate debt, set savings goals, and create a budget that supports your dreams. The more you engage with your financial habits, the more empowered you feel. You’re not only building a safety net but creating a life that’s less about “getting by” and more about thriving on your terms. Remember, a financially secure future is about intention and patience; it’s built step-by-step.

3. Health and Wellness: Care for Body and Mind

Health is often our most underappreciated asset—until life reminds us how essential it is. Make it a priority to eat well, stay active, and get enough rest. This could mean setting aside time for a morning walk, a home workout, or even some mindful breathing exercises. Mental health is equally important—so consider journaling, meditating, or seeking support if needed. A healthy body and mind equip you to manage stress and handle unexpected situations with clarity and strength.

4. Family and Friendships: Nurture Meaningful Connections

Our family and friends bring meaning and joy, and they’re our support systems through every season of life. Use this time to reach out, check in, and invest in those bonds. Whether it’s scheduling regular video calls with family or making time for friends, nurturing these relationships can help us feel grounded. People with strong connections to others often find it easier to cope with challenges, so keep those connections close, even if it means setting reminders to stay in touch.

5. Creativity: Inner Passion

Creativity isn’t just about art—it’s about thinking outside the box, finding joy in the present, and problem-solving. Engage in creative activities that feed your soul, whether that’s painting, writing, cooking, or even brainstorming new ideas for work or personal projects. Not only is it a break from daily demands, but it’s also a powerful tool for self-discovery. Creativity encourages a flexible, open mindset that’s vital for personal growth.

6. Romantic Relationships: Foster Communication and Growth

Whether you’re single or in a relationship, let this be a time of clarity in love. If you’re with a partner, talk about your goals together and find ways to support each other’s growth. If you’re single, use this time to reflect on what you want from a future relationship and what you’re willing to bring to it. Nurturing a healthy, positive relationship with yourself is the foundation for all connections—building self-love strengthens all the love we’re capable of giving and receiving.

7. Self-Development: Set Personal Goals for Growth

Self-development lies at the core of "My Very Good Year." This journey is all about intentional steps, however small, toward becoming a better version of yourself. Choose goals that excite and challenge you—reading more, learning new skills, or building daily habits. These actions build confidence and resilience, empowering you to face future challenges with a sense of self-assurance. Setting personal goals for growth can change the way you see yourself and open doors to new possibilities.

It’s easy to get caught up in the “what ifs” of life, but grounding ourselves in daily, productive actions helps us maintain a sense of control and direction. The key is self-efficacy: the belief in your ability to make positive changes. Embrace a growth mindset, and remember that small, consistent steps forward can create a powerful impact over time.

If there’s one thing to take away, it’s this: This journey isn’t about perfection; it’s about progress. You have the tools within you to craft a fulfilling life at any time. Here’s to making this our very good year by focusing on what we can control, embracing intentionality and that’s a year worth working toward.
