Non-Essential

Do you consider yourself essential? This past week the world has been realizing who is essential and who is non-essential in the workforce. I have witnessed mixed feelings in people around me as they soak this all in. I had to stop myself and ask what this all meant for me and the so-called life I had been busting my ass to live.

Whether you want to be categorized as essential at this point in time or not, it is a realization of our everyday living as we have known it. Hundreds of people have spent countless hours serving others, commuting, dealing with shitty ass bosses, annoying colleagues, and working weekends away from family for forty plus hours a week. Many of those same people are now considered non - essential. OUCH!!

As we see our everyday life shifting to some unknown space, I began to reflect on things and take stock of what was essential to me. This thought process was not based on what a company or the government told me, but rather my own perception of the world. Some of us have spent years giving so much of our time, energy, and expertise to insecurity. Was being essential really a good thing? And even further by who’s definition?

I want to be essential where it matters the most and that was within my own personal life and family. Since when did we start letting the world tell us who we are and dictate things on our behalf. I want to take my control back and create a more self-sufficient lifestyle. What I can say to those who were considered non-essential is that you are not. My advice during this time is to evaluate your strengths and weaknesses. Use whatever you come up with to improve upon yourself. We are unlimited beings and capable of way more than this world wants us to believe.
